Ligeløbende, jævnsides. Parallel (matematik). To rette linjer siges at være på, når de ligger i samme plan og ikke skærer hinanden, hvor langt de end forlænges. Euklid beviste, at to linjer, der skærer en tredje således, at summen af de indvendige vinkler, som de danner med den tredje linje til samme side, er = to rette, er parallelle. Ved denne sætning var altså eksistensen af parallelle linjer godtgjort, og Euklid supplerede sætningen ved opstilling af følgende ubeviste forudsætning (5. postulat, i "Elementerne" i nogle udgaver opført som 11. aksiom): hvis de nævnte indvendige vinklers sum er <2 rette, skærer de to linjer hinanden til den side, hvor vinklerne ligger. Denne forudsætning, parallelaksiomet, og forudsætningerne om at summen af vinklerne i en trekant er='2' rette, kunne let reduceres til hinanden.>
